                                                             A NOTE ON BRETT'S TIPS

Once again Brett has provided us with another useful tip this month for which we thank him. This is now the seventh and during this time some of you have sent suggestions for future tips, as requested by myself.

We appreciate that given the infinite variations possible on these instruments that some would like to have more technical tips. Brett and I have discussed these points together in depth and we feel the original intention for the tips was to provide something that all members could use and could also be applied to the majority of OAS instruments. Basically a musical tip from Brett's own experiences that we could print out and rush to the organ to try out. There is always then the scope to experiment and expand on this with your own particular instrument and style of playing. It is inevitable that some will already know the tips but also many may not (can't win them all).

Some of the more advanced points such as mixer settings etc., although they can make a vast difference to a performance, tend to be refinements that apply more to the individual player and the location in which the instrument is played. As an example, one that I suggested that he did for us was the extra reverb that he had previously set up on my own organ but that may also not apply to every situation. In my small heavily cluttered room it works OK but in a large sparsely furnished situation it could be over the top.

I am sure that many of you are already making the more advanced settings to suit your own individual requirements, tastes and situations. If this is the case, perhaps I could invite you to send some of your settings in to go on the website as short articles so that those who like to try the more advanced fine tuning of their instrument can also try them out.

The Club has been very fortunate to have Brett's support on this and I hope that he will continue to give us the benefit of his experience with his "Tip of the Month" which I'm sure we all look forward to.

Brett can also offer tuition in your own home.  If you would like to take advantage of this service to learn more about your own particular instrument then please send him an e.mail for details. brett.wales@sky.com

My Suggested Tip For November

Now please forgive me if you already know this one but many people I have visited with OAS instrument have not heard of this short cut.

If you want to create your own mappings of sounds or style you can do so with ease on the OAS. Being able to map your own or favourite sounds or styles can make playing your instrument so much easier.

For example a sound I use a lot is an Akai sample of the older WERSI Tenor sax, so I have mapped it in to the first space on the Tenor Sax button so that in order to call up this sound quickly it only now requires one touch.

Here's for the short cut.
If you choose a button that you would like to edit the mapping of then hold it down for 1-2 seconds this will then take you directly to the mapping facility of that particular sound. You can then simply choose the sound and space by selecting and pressing the actual space and level. You have 5 available to fill so all you do is go to SAVE and OVERWRITE MAPPING then you can change the sound or style to place it in which ever position is most convenient for you.

Each level has the ability to hold 9 sounds or styles so there shouldn't be a problem for space and also if you scroll though some of the sounds in the sound window you'll be surprised how many sounds are not already mapped by WERSI.

Don't be frightened to experiment you won't do any damage but if you do want to go back to the original mapping either make a back up or you can always restore from the latest WERSI OAS disc.

*This tip is suitable for Version 6 upwards*
